Project Summary
I have created a short platformer level that shows off moving platforms and a wall running mechanic. I have designed the level with a pirate theme and have used assets and audio that is suitable for it. I first started by creating the wall running mechanic that allows players to jump seamlessly from one wall to another. The character doesn’t have an animation for wall-running and it looks unfinished, I couldn’t find an animation for it, and I also can't make my own animation for the mechanic. I then started making a simple level using a blueprint that made a platform move on a loop between two points. I also included basic platforms for the player to jump across and walls the player can wall run on. I found music that fit the pirate theme and I made the Wav file into a sound cue that plays on a loop inside the level blueprint. Then, I extended the level adjusting the size and placement of all the meshes so that the level would play smoother and had an end goal. I used pre-made assets from Itch.io to make this level.
I should’ve made a blockout of the level before I made it, It would’ve made the creation of the level much easier and efficient. I only didn’t do this because I started making a basic level used for testing out mechanics and then expanded and iterated that until I finished the final version of it. Furthermore, I tried making my own assets in Blender to add to my level however I was having problems putting them into Unreal Engine and, they didn’t look as good as the pre-made assets I had found.
Personally, this project has helped me gain more confidence in level blueprints and setting up game mechanics. I have also learned more about how to design a level around mechanics so that the level will show them off and the player can try them more. Also, I learned how to add background music the plays on a loop into the level blueprint. Additionally, I also learned how to use the foliage tool to place a mesh in a large amount on a surface.
I think the level’s theme is shown well visually through the meshes and the audio adds to the adventure atmosphere I was trying to create. Also, the level efficiently shows off the mechanics I wanted the player to use.
